  • Gangeshwar Temple is situated 3 kms away from Diu in Fudam Village. Shivlinga known as Gangeshwar is seen in the midst of the rocks on the seashore.
  • As it is situated on the beach, the gentle sea waves offering their obeisance to the “Shiv Lingas” in stone have a mystic aura around them in the cave temple of Gangeshwar where the Lord makes his presence felt.
  • It is believed that the 5 Pandavas during their exile worshiped Lord Shiva in this temple.
  • St. Thomas Church - MuseumThe Church was built in the year 1598 by an order of Bishop D. Aleixo Menezes. It was the first Parish Church of Diu.
  • Later on the status of the Parish Church was transferred to the Church of Immaculate Conception.
  • As this church of St. Thomas ceased to be the Parish Church it was also desecrated and it was used for various profane purposes.
  • The Altar is said to have been transferred to Silvassa.
  • At present, it houses a Museum inaugurated on 12th October, 1992. Carved woods, old statues, stone inscriptions and other artifacts are collected from various sites and displayed in the Museum.
  • It is an archaeological treasure house.

  • The Fortress of Panikotha is a magnificent stone structure in the sea, built right at the mouth of the creek. It was built during the Muslim domain by Malik Aiyaz.
  • It served as an entry post to control the movement of the Merchant Ships entering Diu for trading the rich Asian merchandise especially the Indian spices.
  • The movement of the ships were also controlled by a defensive system which joined the Bastion of the sea or the Fortress to the Bastion at the shore by a thick metallic chain upon the river bed.
  • This Fortress of Panikotha is about one nautical mile from Diu Jetty and can be reached only by a motor boat.
  • Located in the middle of the sea, the Fortress makes for a beautiful view whether seen from the Jetty, from the Fort, from the Village Ghoghla or from Diu proper.
  • This Fortress has been illuminated with special light effects giving it a mesmerizing beauty at night.
  • St. Paul Church, as it is widely known is also called the Church of Immaculate Conception. It has both historical as well as religious importance.

  • The Church is considered as one of the most beautiful Portuguese Churches in India. In front of every Christian Church there is a Cross to welcome the visitors. It is the sign of Christian faith.
  • Therefore stepping inside the campus of Church, to the left hand corner is a beautiful and delicately adorned cross in stone and masonry work which immediately attracts ones attention.
  • It is a little marvel. To the left hand side there is a statue of Christ the King erected on a pillar and further to its corner is the grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes.

  • During the Indo Pak War in 1971, she fell prey to three torpedoes fired by a Pakistan submarine on 9/12/1971 and sank 40 nautical miles off the coast of Diu taking down with her a crew of 18 Officers and 176 Sailors.
  • The heroic act of Cap. Mulla and his valiant crew is shining example of unyielding spirit and indomitable courage glorifying the heist traditions of the Indian Navy.
  • The INS Khukri Memorial was inaugurated on 15th December, 1999 and is found erected on the hillock at Chakratirth beach. It is a replica of the INS Khukri Naval Ship.
  • It was built in the year 1593, at the time of Governor Pero de Naya. It was the Friary of the Franciscans.
  • The Church is still in use. And the cloister was converted into a Hospital ever since the Church of St. John of God collapsed in the year 1832 where a hospital was functioning. Today a new hospital building is built and this heritage building is vacated. It served as hospital for about 184 years.
  • The Church is situated at a close distance from St. Paul Church. It is prominently seen as it is built on a high platform having a staircase with 20 steps. It also has a very high tower.
  • The Church has vaulted dome, built of stone. The front portion close to the main altar is artistically decorated and has a celestial aura.
  • Beside this, the main altar is decorated with beautiful fresco, which immediately attracts the attention of the visitor.
