Datar Hills
  • At a distance of 8 km from Junagadh Junction, Datar Hill is holy site in Junagadh city of Gujarat.
  • Situated opposite to Girnar Hills, it is one of the popular places of pilgrimage in Gujarat and amongst the most visited sites in Junagadh.
  • Situated at an altitude of 2,779 feet, Datar Hill is one of the five principle peaks of Mount Girnar. Also known as Guru Dattatray or Dattatri, it is a popular religious place in Saurashtra region as it houses the shrine of Jamiyal Shah Datar.
  • The dargah at the bottom of the hill is the tomb of a Muslim saint Jamal Shah Datar. It is ornately carved and crowned with a large onion dome and small minarets in a style similar to maqbara, the mausoleums of Nawabs of Junagadh.
  • The place is truly scenic during monsoon as tiny waterfalls cascade down the hills.
Girnar Hill

  • Spread over an area of about 70 miles, Mount Girnar is older than the Himalayas and the Jain temples upon it are amongst the most ancient in the country.
  • It has five principal peaks Ambaji, Gorakhnath, Guru Dattatreya, Oghad Ansuya and Kalika.
  • Out of these, Gorakhnath is situated at an altitude of 3672 feet and is the highest point in Gujarat.
  • For centuries, Mount Girnar has been one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Gujarat and indeed in all of Western India, with 866 Hindu and Jain temples spread over its 5 summits.

Dattatreya Temple
  • Located on the top of the Girnar Mountain in Junagadh in Gujarat, Dattatreya Temple is revered Hindu temple.
  • It is dedicated to the holy trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva collectively known as Dattatreya or Datta.
  • However, Dattatreya Temple can only be reached by scaling the height of the mountain which is approximately 10000 steps.
  • This temple is a huge pilgrim magnet for the popular Maha Shivaratri fair that is annually held during the Hindu month of Magha.
  • The roundabout trek would be approximately 15 to 16 hours. However, the climb is not an easy one, and the descend is even difficult.
Jain Temples
  • There is a group of Jain temples in Girnar and are all unique yet similar in architecture and style. The Neminath Temple, built from 1128 AD to 1159 AD, is one of the main attractions.
  • The temple complex has quadrangle courtyards, corridors and other shrines as well, with pillars adorned with intricate carvings of Jain Tirthankars.
  • The idol of Bhagwan Neminatha here is thought to be the oldest one in the world, approximately 84,785 years old.
  • Innumerable monks come here to attain Moksha. Girnar is an important religious place for the Jains.
  • There are other Jain temples in the Girnar Hills namely Baghwan Rishabhadev Temple, Mallinath Temple and Baghwan Parshwanath Temple.
  • Baghwan Rishabhadev Temple can be distinguished easily because of its gold color architecture. Baghwan Parshwanath Temple, also known as Meravasi, was built in the 15th century.

Damodar Kund
  • Damodar Kund is one of the sacred lakes as per Hindu beliefs, which is located at the foothills of Girnar hills.
  • It is considered holy, as per Hindu mythology and many Hindus prefer to bathe and immerse the ashes and the bones left after cremation of dead bodies, here at Damodar Kund due to a belief that the departed souls would get moksha here.
  • It may be mentioned here other such famous places for immersion of ashes and bones ( Hindu rite of asthi-visarjana ) are in Ganga at Haridwar and Triveni Sangam at Prayag.
  • The water of the lake has properties of dissolving the bones.The lake is 257 ft long and 50 ft broad and only 5 feet deep.
  • It is surrounded by a well built ghat.The steps for going up the Girnar hills start near Damodar Kund.
  • one can see the temples of Damodar, Radha, Baladeva and Vagheshwari, which were supposedly made by the Suryavanshi ruler named Chandraketpur.

Uparkot Fort
  • This ancient fort is believed to have been built in 319 BC by the Mauryan emperor Chandragupta, though it has been extended many times. In places, the ramparts reach 20m high.
  • It’s been besieged 16 times, and legend has it that the fort once withstood a 12-year siege.
  • The views over the city and east to Girnar Hill are superb, and within its walls, there is a magnificent former mosque, a set of millennia-old Buddhist caves and two fine step-wells.
  • The best time to visit is between November and February.
Navghan Kuwo and Adi-kadi Vav
  • Adi-Kadi Vav and Navghan Kuwo are two step wells located inside the Uparkot fort in Junagadh.
  • While the former was built by two slave girls of the Chudasama kingdom, the latter came into being much before the Adi-kadi Vav.
  • Adi Kadi vav is around 300 feet in length and 11 feet in width and 170 steps to reach to water level.
  • The third gate of fort which is closed now is located in Adi Kadi Vav and small spot of Ma Devi Khodiar.
  • There was also a window to punish the criminal at Adi Kadi Vav. Navghan Kuvo is located beside the Adi Kadi Vav. It is 170 feet in depth, 30 feet in width and 200 steps to with circular stairs.

  • Also known as Junagadh Zoo, it is the second oldest zoo in India and among the must include places in Junagadh sightseeing packages.

Moti Baug
  • At a distance of 3 km from Junagadh Junction, Moti Baug is botanical garden situated in the premises of Junagadh Agricultural University.
  • It is one of the wonderful places to visit in Junagadh. Moti Baug is known for its verdant greenery and lush gardens.
  • It was built by Nawab Muhammad Mahabat Khanji III of Junagadh in the memory of his dog Moti. In the year 1960, a part of this garden was used to establish Junagadh Agriculture College.
  • The garden is stretched across an area of 2,485 hectares, which includes the 754.62 hectares of Agricultural University of Junagadh campus and Botanical Garden. Presently, the entire area of this garden is divided into 17 sub-centers and is the source of employment to almost 1500 people.
  • The park boasts of wide variety of shrubs and flowering plants. Apart from the land portion, there is a lake inside Moti Baug called Pari Talav which offers a surreal view of the entire garden.

Mahabat Maqbara Palace
  • Mahabat Maqbara Palace, also Mausoleum of Bahaduddinbhai Hasainbhai, is a mausoleum in Junagadh, India, that was once home to the Muslims rulers the Nawabs of Junagadh.
  • The city of Junagadh has other 18th-century mausoleums built by the nawabs in the area around Chitkana Chowk.
  • It houses the tombs of Mohabbat khanji and Bahaduddin Hasainbhai in the Bahaduddinhassainbhai Maqabra and it was built in the late 19th century.
  • The Mahabat Maqbara is a mesmerising union of Indian, Islamic and Gothic styles of architecture. It houses intricate carvings and artistic expertise expressed throughout its structure.
  • The Mahabat Maqbara also features arches, pillars and the classic Islamic domes. The central portion of the Maqbara is bracketed with two pillars honing a spiral stairway and individual domes.
